Root Canal Treatment

Root canal therapy is a commonly misunderstood procedure. Many people associate root canals with pain, when they actually relieve the symptoms associated with an infection inside your tooth.

At Bright Dental, both Dr. Chandok and Dr. Rehman have many years of experience performing root canals for our patients. Dr. Chandok, in particular, actually enjoys this procedure because it gives him an opportunity to save a tooth that will otherwise require an extraction.

How We Diagnose the Need for Root Canal Treatment

When patients come to us in pain, one of the first things we do is take a dental x-ray to determine the cause. In some cases, we can see signs of infection on an x-ray because it shows up as a dark spot near the root of your tooth.

Some of the symptoms that indicate the need for a root canal include:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Sensitivity (especially to heat)
  • A dark appearance to your tooth
  • Facial or jaw tenderness
  • Throbbing that may worsen when you lie down

If you do need a root canal, our dentists will make sure that you stay comfortable throughout your procedure. They make every procedure as pain-free as possible so that you can have worry-free dentistry.

Your Root Canal Treatment

Root canal therapy should feel not different than a regular filling. We will make sure your tooth is completely numb before we begin your treatment.

After making a tiny access point, we will clean the infection from inside your tooth using precision instruments. We will also place medication to promote healing and prevent re-infection.

Finally, we will fill your canal with a rubber-like substance and seal your tooth using a temporary filling to keep out bacteria while it heals.

Post-Root Canal Treatment

You will probably feel a little sensitive for a couple of days as your body completes the healing process, but you should gradually feel better each day. Soon, you will feel pain-free and healthy again.

Within a couple of weeks, we will invite you back into our office to check your healing progress. If your tooth is infection free, we will place a permanent restoration to protect it. In most cases, we will recommend a dental crown because it will provide the greatest longevity for your tooth. Teeth become more brittle after a root canal, and a dental crown will protect your tooth, absorbing excess forces as you chew.
